Carlene Winch-Dummett, an Australian teacher of English, is also a qualified author, anthropologist, educational theorist, keen photographer and Australian history enthusiast. She was the recipient of a Commonwealth Undergraduate Scholarship; a HECS Exemption Award for Master of Education; An Australian Post-Graduate Award with Stipend for PhD ; the French Government Stage de Noumea award to study the teaching of French; and other grants. Carlene taught English, and other subjects, to students in primary schools, secondary schools, colleges, tafe and university in New South Wales and the Australian Capital Territory. She also taught English at Ranwadi College Pentecost Island, Vanuatu on several occasions as a visiting teacher. Carlene has collaborated with Silas Buli, Principal of Ranwadi College Pentecost Island, to study and record the kastom (custom) of South West Pentecost.
For 10 years Carlene was the Australian contact for the UNESCO Associated Schools Project. She chaired meetings, shared and led workshops, and wrote reports at UNESCO ASP meetings in N'Djamena,Chad; Port-of-Spain, Trinidad and Tobago; Nuku'alofa, Tonga; Apia, Samoa; Christchurch, N.Z., and Melbourne Australia.
Carlene has written three academic theses in the fields of education and anthropology. Carlene has had papers published in academic journals; and in the journals of a local history association. She wrote an autobiography of her initial fieldwork in Vanuatu.Carlene also records using cameras. Many of her photos and writings are in the Vanuatu Cultural Centre and National Library, Port Vila, Vanuatu; NLA; Mitchell Library NSW; Jesse Street Women's Library, Sydney; KAVHA, Norfolk Island; MDHS, Moruya; and local libraries.
